About the MUSC Copy
-
The copy presented in the
MUSC (the Meisei University Shakespeare Collection database)
is the Second Folio copy shelf-marked
`932.141 Sh 12 1632-21' and coded `MR 3571', sized 325x235 mm. It
was acquired by the Library in 1990 as a copy in the set of four
Folios previously owned by the 11th Viscount Cobham, Hagley Hall,
Stourbridge. The First Folio copy that is included in the set is the West 210.
It has
the bookplates of the Hagley Hall Library pasted on the end paper and
of Festina Lente on sig. πA2v. `To the Reader' (sig. πA1v) is
obviously a facsimile. The title page (sig. πA2) is mounted on other
paper, and the few subsequent preliminaries have been repaired to preserve the
original.

Annotations
-
The first two plays, The Tempest and The Two Gentlemen of Verona, in
this copy are loaded with manuscript annotations in ink that consist
of the Arabic numerals, nine types of symbols and of two transcripts
of Johnson's notes, probably transcribed from his 1773 edition of
Shakespeare. The annotations found in these texts have been
transcribed by Noriko Sumimoto in `The Tempest and The Two
Gentlemen of Verona: Annotations in a copy of the Second Folio of
Shakespeare' (Research Bulletin of Meisei University, Humanities and
Social Sciences Vol. 40 (2004), 173-79.)

Replacement of images (Feb. 19, 2018)
-
Image files of the MUSC Second Folio from #81 to #908 were replaced on the
19th of February, 2018. During one of the research sessions in the Meisei
rare books room on the second folio with joint researchers, it was
discovered that the images for these pages were not those of the copy coded
MR3571 as was intended, but those of another Second Folio copy coded MR1964.
We apologize for this error and announce that it has been corrected. The
complete set of image files of the copy coded MR1964 can be accessed
HERE.
